RIP Hubert Sumlin - November 16, 1931 to December 4, 2011. Best known for his extraordinary guitar work on the 1950s and 1960s recordings of Howlin' Wolf, Hubert Sumlin is considered among the greatest guitarists of all time. Hubert passed away of a heart attack on Sunday, Dec 4 after a long bout with respiratory illness. He was 80 years old. Though his health had been problematic for years, he continued to tour and delight concert and festival audiences until close to the end. Born in Greenville, Mississippi in 1931 and raised in Hughes, Arkansas, Hubert got his first guitar at age 6. Hubert was very interested in music and as a boy snuck into a nightclub to see Howlin' Wolf perform. Hubert's youthful enthusiasm won Wolf's heart, who took the young boy in and developed a father-like mentoring role with Hubert. Wolf would move to Chicago in 1953 and a year later would call for Hubert to move to Chicago to join his band. Initially Hubert played a secondary role in the group with guitarist Jody Williams getting most of the limelight. But when Jody left the band about 2 years later, Hubert became the star guitarist. Hubert's unorthodox approach, using innovative rhythmic textural lines and wild bursts of lead guitar, became an integral part of the Howlin' Wolf sound., Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters reportedly had a rivalry going as to who had the top blues band in Chicago (both were amazing bands) and for a short period of time Muddy recruited Hubert away from Wolf only to have Hubert return to Wolf's band and never leave again. Hubert's guitar was an essential and consistent part of the success of Wolf's recordings and live shows. The music achieved by the Wolf / Sumlin combination reached the highest of heights in the blues. When Howlin' Wolf recorded the London Sessions in 1970, Hubert began a life long relationship with UK blues artists like Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones. In 1976, when Wolf died, Hubert was devastated. At first Eddie Shaw (Wolf's saxophonist) tried to keep the Howlin' Wolf band together but Hubert would drift: spending time in Austin, Texas under the care of Clifford Antone, or in Chicago where he stayed with Sunnyland Slim. In addition to recordings with Wolf, Hubert appeared on Chicago sessions with Eddie Shaw & The Wolf Gang, Andrew McMahon, Sunnyland Slim, Louisiana Red, Carey Bell, Little Eddie, Big Mac, and others. He recorded numerous albums under his own name for L+R, Black Top, Tone-Cool, Rykodisc, APO, JSP, Blind Pig, Blues Planet, Blues Special and other labels. At a point, under the guidance of manager Toni Ann Mamary, Hubert started to get his due as the guitar legend he was. Hubert found himself hanging around and performing with rock stars, playing major festivals, and having his historic bio, Incurable Blues, published. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2008, Through all this notoriety, Hubert remained the kind, gentle soul with the same boyish enthusiasm that first befriended the Howlin' Wolf. His guitar playing was always intriguing, unorthodox, and impossible to copy. As he was bedridden and nearing the last hours of his life, his final request was to play his guitar one last time. We thank Hubert for the light of joy he shined on the world and the heavenly music that he left for future generations to behold. He was our blues blessing. Special thanks to Hugh Southard of Blue Mountain Artists, Bob Margolin, and Little Frank who worked with him frequently on the road in recent years, Pat Morgan, James Cotton, Paul Oscher, Kim Wilson, Amanda Taylor, Diunna Greenleaf, Twist Turner, Little Mike, and all his friends and fans who all were there at all times to support Hubert.

RIP Paul Thomas - August 27, 1955 to November 20, 2011. Paul Thomas is best known as Phoenix's blues and roots, stand-up bass master. Though not a well known name outside of the Phoenix community, chances are that you have heard some of the celebrated recordings that he played on. Paul Thomas passed away from a reported fatal combination of alcohol and pain relievers while visiting his hometown of Tucson. He was 56. Paul had moved to Phoenix in the mid 1980s and worked in numerous Arizona-based blues and roots units including The Hoodoo Kings, The Rhythm Room All-Stars, Chico Chism, Pat Roberts & The Heymakers, The Jump Back Brothers, Midnite Blues, The Rocket 88s and many others. He also had worked occasionally in bands with Junior Watson, Lynwood Slim, and Rusty Zynn. As a member of the Rhythm Room All-Stars, Paul was called upon to back many of the great blues masters live and in the studio. Paul's great bass work can be heard on nationally released CDs by Henry Gray, Mojo Buford, Pinetop Perkins, Louisiana Red, Bob Corritore, Big Pete Pearson, Chief Schabuttie Gilliame, The Hoodoo Kings and more. He was best known for his stand-up bass work in which he had championed all of the old school nuances of the instrument. He was inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 1999 . Paul simply loved to play bass and brought joy, humor and masterful bass playing to the bandstand each night. His absence leaves a unfillable gap in the Phoenix blues and roots scene. Paul leaves his legacy with his 20 year old son Dylan Thomas, a fine young man and a full-time professional bassist. Thank you Paul for your many years of great contributions to the Phoenix music scene. You will be greatly missed.
RIP Howard Tate - August 13, 1939 to December 2, 2011 The influential soul singer Howard Tate was best known for soul hits like "Ain't Nobody Home" and "Get It While You Can", with the later covered and re-popularized by Janis Joplin. Tate died in his New Jersey apartment of natural causes at age 72. Born in Macon, Georgia and raised in Philadelphia, Tate came into prominence in the late 1960s through the 1970s with his brilliant collaborations with producer / songwriter Jerry Ragavoy. The recordings from this period are considered among the greatest examples of soul music ever recorded. After a tragic decline into drug addiction and homelessness during the 1980s, Howard Tate was able to pull himself together to experience a brilliant comeback with the Ragavoy produced 2003 release "Rediscovered", which was nominated for a Grammy for best contemporary blues album. The later part of his career saw many well-received festival and concert appearances and additional great recordings to add to his historic legacy. He will be fondly remembered for his blues-drenched voice complete with brilliant bursts of falsetto. That voice always sold the message of the song. RIP J Blackfoot - November 20, 1946 to November 30, 2011 Soul singer J Blackfoot is best known for his work in the 1970s as lead singer with the group The Soul Children and his 1983 hit "Taxi." He died at age 73 after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. Born John Colbert in Greenville, Mississippi and raised in Memphis, he received his moniker as a child from frequently walking barefoot. Musical prominence came when Stax producer / songwriter David Porter recruited Blackfoot, together with Norman West, Anita Louis, and Shelbra Bennett, to form The Soul Children. Between 1968 and 1978, The Soul Children had 15 chart hits and recorded seven well-received albums. Blackfoot later recorded a number of sides under his own name and in 1983 made a hit with the ballad "Taxi". He remained an active recording artist until the end and was a very popular concert attraction in the south and in Japan and Europe. J Blackfoot's sweet voice will live on in soul music history through his legacy of fine recordings.

INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE 2012

The dates for the 2012 International Blues Challenge (IBC) will be January 31 - February 4, 2012. The competition will be held in Memphis, TN in the Beale Street entertainment district.

Tickets will be available on October 1.

IBC will begin with the FedEx International Showcase (Jan 31). The Challenge has been expanded to a four day format. Wednesday and Thursday night we will hold the quarter finals (Feb 1-2), Semi finals will be held Friday night (Feb 3) and concluding with finals in the Orpheum Theater (Feb 4). The 2012 International Blues Challenge will be the 28th year of Blues musicians from around the world competing for cash, prizes, and industry recognition. The Blues Foundation will present the 28th International Blues Challenge January 31-February 4, 2012 in Memphis, TN. The world's largest gathering of Blues acts represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations for the Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to take their act to the international stage. In 2011, 110 bands and 83 solo/duo acts entered, filling the clubs up and down Beale Street for the quarter-finals on Wednesday and Thursday, the semi-finals on Friday and the finals at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday. We will have at least that many in 2012.
The 28th year of the International Blues Challenge will once again include a youth showcase for those under the age of 21. The 28^th IBC will include an afternoon (Friday, February 3, 2011) of talented young people showcasing their talents for record labels, media, festivals, managers, talent buyers and the fans.

The week of events will once again kick off Tuesday night with a Meet & Greet hosted by the Beale Street Merchants Association at the New Daisy Theater, followed by the FedEx International Showcase. In addition to the evening Blues competition, the days are filled with seminars and workshops and topped off in a moving Saturday morning brunch in which the Blues community will honor its own with the prestigious Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) awards that honor the men and women, who have made significant contributions to the Blues music world, in 20 categories such as journalism, literature and photography and to the best clubs and festivals, as well as managers, promoters and producers.

The amount of talent that gathered in Memphis was staggering. I have to admit it sent chills down my spine whenever I looked around and realized I was in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge and that I actually knew some of these performers on stage. The IBC has evolved into the nation's biggest and most respected showcase for Blues musicians ready to take their act to the national stage. The IBC is a judged "Battle of the Bands" in which competitors take the stage and play a short set for a panel of judges. The acts are judged based on an established set of criteria.
The IBC represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations (mostly blues societies) for the Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to perform on a national stage, but just need that extra break. Each Affiliate of The Blues Foundation has the right to send a band and solo/duo act to represent the organization at the IBC Semi-Finals on Beale Street in Memphis, TN.
Affiliates are encouraged to stage a regional preliminary IBC competition, with the winner of that competition representing the organization in the Memphis international competition. Usually, these preliminary rounds are held in clubs as part of a fundraiser or simply an excitement-building event. Each organization is free to structure the preliminary round as it sees fit, as long as a single band and/or solo/duo act is identified. However, since The Blues Foundation scoring criteria will determine the ultimate winner, we strongly encourage our Affiliates to use the same system in the preliminary competitions.

Pat Ramsey, from Shreveport, LA started playing harp at age 17. Johnny Winter heard him, and hired Pat to play harp on his album "White Hot and Blue". This led to work with Butch Trucks' band "Trucks" and a local Tallahassee, FL band called "Crosscut Saw" featuring a 17 year old guitar prodigy, Julian Kasper. After touring with a few other bands, Pat with the help of Julian and some local Memphis musicians, produced the CD "It's About Time". The CD received very strong reviews and Pat began touring as Pat Ramsey and The Blues Disciples.
Pat's stellar performances with The Blues Disciples were recorded live many times. This CD compilation is from their 2004 shows in Key West, FL.
Pat Ramsey passed away on Nov. 17, 2008 after a long illness. His music lives on and he is remembered in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.
Dave Renson started playing guitar at the age of 10. He has played with many of New Orleans' great musicians and has appeared several times at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He worked as a Blues Disciple from 1997 until Pat's untimely death.
John Wentzien toured with Pat for several years. He hails from Niota, IL
and has his own blues band, "The Smokin' Mojo Kings".
Duane Waider played with Pat for 1 1/2 years and left to start his own group "Mad Love". He lives in L.A. and is currently the drummer and lead vocalist for "ICONS The Band".

Former lead guitarist for the late Junior Wells presentshis latest project, KEEPIN ON, with a mix of originals andsome interesting covers that have been ignored by toomany folks in the reading audience for way too long.
In the latter subdivision, the boogie of John LeeHooker's "Goin' Upstairs" is fueled by Castiglia's slidework while Mack Rice's "Cadillac Assembly Line" burns throughout. Add a funky take on Bob Dylan's "Til I Fell In Love With You" and a resurrection of T-Bone Walker's "MyBaby Is Now On My Mind" to the list of orphaned songs finding a new home. Pick of the category, though, has to be Peter Green's "Could Not Ask For More," where both harpist Sandy Mack and piano man Bill "Mighty" Quinn duel for the spotlight, much to the delight of the listener.
On the original side of the ledger, the title cut channels Creedence Clearwater Revival with Castiglia cranking it outat the end, while the guitarist duels with bassist A.J. Kelly during the instrumental "Mojo 305." Although KEEPIN'ON has pretty high standard throughout, that can't besaid for "Do You Love Me?," a funky, and I mean that inevery sense of the word, dance number that I'm still trying to figure out how to razor blade off the disc.
With Toby Walker adding dobro to the shadings of "Sweet Southern Angel" and "Murderin'' Blues," KEEPIN'ON has a lot of fine string work throughout that can be appreciated even if you don't live in the Windy City.

Biography: I was born and raised in a Midwest steel town. After a couple of weeks “working in the mill”, I met a harp player named Malcolm Gibson and that was that. Right after I started college I met these old "beats" who filled my head with life "on the road". Off I went with my axe and 20 bucks, bound for everywhere.
In Chicago, Brownie McGhee told me, "you got a right to sing the blues 'cause you ain't never goin’ home". That was in 1969. Man was he right. Claiming neither place nor stone, I have traveled and worked and played all across the U.S. of A. Back then a few of us decided that the country blues tradition should be preserved. I was enthralled with the cats being "rediscovered", like John Hurt and Lightning, and the renaissance of old country blues.
While the "original" songs started coming and the guitar developed, I lived in the mountains and on the prairie and all along the gulf coast, always absorbing the music of the heartland. I lived and performed in Chicago and Denver and Breckenridge and Detroit and Cincinnati and Dayton and Dallas and Houston and NYC. The only roots I had were in the blues. With time my style developed. I was taking those traditional country blues roots and writing my own tunes. I call it contemporary country blues. You got to sing about what you know, or it ain’t the blues.
I first came to Austin in the back of a Winnebago with Kenneth Threadgill in the passenger seat. After opening for him at the Rubiat in Dallas he gave me a lift for my gig at Saxon Pub, the original one, opening for Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee in Austin.
In the back room Sonny and I were pickin’ around when Brownie walked in. Sonny said “ listen to this boy, that’s the way I want you to play this song”. I could have crawled under the table. Those guys were always taking jabs at each other. Brownie was gracious though and had me come up to play the tune on stage with Sonny. My most special memory.
Later, after becoming a seismic observer for 12 years (the earth was my guitar and dynamite my pick), I came back to Austin on breaks and played at Chicago House. I met a lot of good folks like Jimmie Lafave, and Guy Forsythe. Jimmie called me "a legend in his spare time." Funny. He told me I should move here.
When the oilfield crashed, I landed in Austin to drive a cab and play music (just like Harry Chapin). I played the Saxon Pub (the current one) regularly, the Mance Lipscomb tribute at Antones’, every week at the Dam Café with Rex Whitton, and other local clubs. I played with Frumholz, Rusty Weir, Tim Henderson (he told me I should quit my day job), and Leann Atherton. Larry Nye produced my first album, “Good & Ready’.
Four years and an album later it was off to Nashville, again to drive cab and pitch songs. I made all the songwriters nights, met a lot of songwriters, and learned about the “craft“ of songwriting. After a couple of years and modicum of success, I succumbed to the perils of the street and became very ill.
Upon release from hospital, I went back to the oilfield for a couple of years, but then it crashed again as it is want to do. So I came back to Austin and got a job (not in a cab). Soon, I started playing Ego's once a week for a year and a half, with Larry Eisenberg on stand up bass and Jimi Lee on harp. During that time we opened mostly for Bobby Doyle.
Time gets away as you age seems like, just trying to survive. I had to slow down some and just do my day job. It happens like that as we get older. I played open mics once in a while, rode out to Luckenbach and picked sometimes. I finally recorded “Moan My Name”, a second album. I did 2 benefits for the Stroke Foundation in San Antonio. The second one with Vince Bell and Steve Fromholz. Talk about inspirational people. Steve and I first met forty years ago. It felt like a full circle.
Now I am free at last to devote full time to writing, recording and performing. Always said I’d do it. Now is the time. In June, 2009, “ Live @ Hyde Park Bar and Grill” was recorded, with Jimi Lee. Now, new songs are coming and another CD is in the works. Gigs are happenning. That’s my story, so far.
Instrumentation: dale leroy perry, vocals and acoustic guitar. Sometimes with harp player Jimi Lee, sometimes with bass player Larry Eisenberg, sometimes solo.

Music has always been a passion in my life. over the years it has had it's ups and downs. I retired from music for a very long time until things in my life changed and the passion came again. All my guys in the band have been playing professionaly all of their lives and have a lot of passion for their music. we have a large group of friends and family that come and see us. we have a great party every time we play. We play rock-blues-funk-r&b a very different sound from anybody else. Only in Texas will you find a rock blues funk band. All our influences are all the rock, blues, funk bands and musicians of yesterday and today.

Well here tell a bit bout ol' Slick.....born in an unknown region of the swampland, Slick never knew who his real mama was nor his papa. The man who he thought was his papa turned out to be a traveling salesman who had traded a broom for ol' Slick when out on one a his rounds and then instead a selling ma a broom he sold her ol Slick, kinda like a broom but not...well Slick grew up in the ways a the swamp and learned how to talk by the age a 5 and then started on a life long pursuit a truck drivin', fornicatin' and spreddin' lil' slicks all over the place...he raised quite a bit a kin and they all turned out.....well not all good...I mean like outlaws.....but it gave ol' Slick material for some tales and he done wrote those down whilst truck drivin' like a man....now in a bid for cash and retirement he put' em down on a spinnin' object and so's ya'all can hear 'em and so on. Now he is a bit allusive being that he has lawmen about him so ya may not be seein' him in public alot but....you can sure hear him....oh he learned the gitar whilst waitin' in the tree with Daisy May, only problem was in order ta not scare off the gators he had to play with no strings....it's hard he says getting used to 'em being on..they get in the way he says...

Biography: Keith Thompson, is a professional musician with many years performing experience. He has worked in several bands, and as a solo artist. He has traveled extensively in the UK. and in European countries susch as, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Holland, Poland and Norway. Keith and his band Strange Brew now have four albums on release in Europe on the Swiss label "Brambus". They started touring after signing to the label back in 1998.

Keith’s musical journey began way before however. He first started playing guitar aged 5! By the time he was 8 he won first prize at a Butlin’s holiday camp talent show playing Beatle tunes. The British blues boom of the 60's produced great guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Peter Green. It was this music alongside popular songwriters like The Beatles, The Stones, and John Martyn and later the British Blues/Rock pioneers Free, Led Zeppelin etc. that Keith grew up listening to. He was 14 when he first started working the pubs and clubs playing mostly covers of these great artists. Soaking in the experience and further influences like, Rory Gallagher & Gary Moore, Keith started to develop his own material. His band, “Poacher Brown” while still teenagers in pre punk 70’s toured Germany, playing 6 nights a week, playing 5, 45 minute sets a night! That was Keith’s first full-time professional stint and it changed his life. This was the same Hamburg culture on which the Beatles cut their musical teeth. He came back in 1978 and joined forces with another local guitarist Mick (Wurzel) Burston (later of Motorhead). This band, “Bunter” started receiving glowing reviews in the national music press.
Keith carried on writing and recording. Working as a session guitarist he has added his skills to various projects including, work on the soundtrack for the best selling computer games. He has released a lot of incidental music for television programs and soundtrack projects and he has sold over 100,000 albums. As a songwriter he has also gained recognition. A few years ago he was voted “Songwriter Of The Year” in Six Counties. He has added his skills on stage or in recordings to projects by Spooky Tooth, Mike D’Abo, Steve Winwood, Ruby Turner, Larry Burton (Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker) Dave Markee and Henry Spinetti (Eric Clapton Band and Tina Turner) Greg Ridley of Humble Pie, Robbie Blunt (Robert Plant) Luther Grosvenor of Mott The Hoople and many others.

The band has been consistently performing in mainland Europe where they are well known to the large blues following as an exciting live band. They have headlined several European Festivals and last year they headlined the British stage of Colne’s “Great British R&B Festival”.

Between the members of the band they have played with the likes of Mick Jagger, Roy Wood, Steve Winwood, Ruby Turner, Peter Green and others. Check out the web-site for details.

The start of Jarrett Fenlon's musical career can be traced back to his early years when he used to sing along to the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison and Eric Clapton while riding in the car. These artists and many others can be identified as influences in the songs that he writes to this very day.

Trained in saxophone, clarinet, piano and drums prior to picking up a guitar in his teenage years Jarrett possessed a solid musical foundation prior to beginning his songwriting career. His lyrics speak of everything from lost love to bad whiskey and appeal to people from all walks of life. Anyone who gives this artist half a listen soon find themselves singing along in no time.

Over the past couple of years Jarrett has performed live along with his band at several historical venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. With the support of several SF Bay area musical veterans/legends Jarrett has the necessary backing to croon out his soulful ballads and foot stomping blues tunes without missing a proverbial beat. He has also performed as a solo artist up and down the West Coast of the U.S. at dozens of small and medium-sized venues.

His sophomore album "Sprung" intertwines elements of country, jazz and pop while at the same time paying proper homage to his blues roots. It was produced/arranged by Steve Kirk who's credits include the composition/production/arrangement of the soundtracks of several well-known video games including Facebook's "Farmville" and Disney's "The Princess & The Frog."

Jarrett graduated from UC Berkeley in with a Bachelor's in Political Science. While attending Cal he walked-on to the Varsity Football team.

Chris Canas formed the Blues Revolution to bring his soul & funk infused blues not only for the seasoned die hards, but also to attract young listeners to help keep the blues alive. His influences include: BB King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Jonny Lang, Prince, Little Milton, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and a host of old and new school cats. Chris' blues will set the mood. Whether dark, playful or in your face jammin', his presence on the stage commands attention from all sides of the room. This band loves a good time. Ambitious, yet down to earth. Blues meet funk meet neo-soul. The Chris Canas Blues Revolution can be seen blazing a trail in the Metro Detroit area and beyond. The front man, Chris Canas; self proclaimed soldier for the blues, has put together a who’s who of veteran musicians to help keep the blues alive in the hearts of all music lovers. Hailing from the Land of Rising Sun (Japan), TOKYO TRAMPS is on a mission to deliver joy and excitement of true American music, Blues and Rock'n'Roll. American music had a tremendous power to make three Japanese come down here. The musical journey started when Satoru Nakagawa left Japan to go to Louisiana searching for the roots of American music. Soon he found its father, the Blues. Yukiko Fujii left a very lucrative job in Tokyo and took a giant step following her heart to play music in America. Kosei Fukuyama had a dream of becoming the best drummer. His ambition is to hit the big time in America. These three had a chance to meet in Boston, where American revolution started. Satoru took its name TRAMPS from his early idol, Bruce Springsteen's song, Born To Run - "Tramps like us, baby, we were born to run." Coming to a foreign land, not having home or families, traveling from place to place searching for the best sounds of America, what else can we do to make our dreams come true except playing for a Rock'n'Roll band?

TOKYO TRAMPS was a semifinalist for "Boston Blues Challenge" in 2009.

TOKYO TRAMPS was the Runner-up winner of Boston Phoenix / WFNX 2007 BEST MUSIC POLL Local Blues Act Category. TRAMPS also won Indie Artist of the Year from Immie Award 2007.

Some might say music is in their blood. It's certainly how they were born and raised. As kids, they occasionally snuck into their father's gigs around LA. In grade school, they were taken to see such diverse and dynamic artists like George Benson and Albert King. They played in bands throughout high school and created the scene. The family turntable was always spinning. Basically, music was a way of life.
It was inevitable that brothers Paul and Michael D'Santi would embark on a musical journey of their own. Together with Michael Johnson and Rickey Tillery, you have the nucleus to the band, D'Santi.

D'Santi is signed with California based indie label Citation Records.
D'Santi has also shared the bill with such notable artists as: Robben Ford, Eric Burdon, Tim Bogart, Robbie Krieger, Foghat, Rod Piazza and James Harmon.

Grants:
Taranco received several arts grants: an Ontario Arts Council multicultural music recording grant, a composition grant from the Toronto Arts Council, another composition grant from the Ontario Arts Council, and a new talent recording grant from The Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Record (FACTOR). These grants made it possible for Ramon to continue recording songs for his first CD of original compositions, “Music From the Bermuda Triangle.”

MUSIC FROM THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE:
Ramon's first CD of original music, “Music From the Bermuda Triangle,” is an Afro-Jazz-Latin fusion album. Strong on percussion, it offers a balanced blend of instrumental and vocal songs using authentic ancient traditional instruments as well as electric guitars and keyboards. “Snow Scorpion,” “Mantiki I” and “Mantiki II” are African-related instrumental pieces. “Yoruba Cuba” and “Music From the Bermuda Triangle” are Afro-Cuban inspired songs with vocals. For some classic southern rock, there’s “Sugar Can Rider” where Ramon shares special memories of his childhood in Cuba. There’s also a tango on the CD, “Tango Solito.” And for R&B lovers, there’s the gospel-influenced “Hard Work.”
Recorded in Toronto, Canada and mixed by Grammy and Juno Award Winning engineer, Kevin Doyle, this fascinating World Beat Fusion gem features musicians from Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Ghana, Holland, Jamaica, Portugal, South Africa and the USA. FILM COMPOSER & MUSICAL ADVISOR:
Music From the Bermuda Triangle has 2 tracks that have been featured in films. “Tango Solito” (written and produced by Taranco) was commissioned by the Canadian Film Centre (founded by Norman Jewison) for the film “L’Hombre” (Catherine Martin, director) that premiered at the Montreal Film Festival. The CD's final track, “Mantiki II,” was featured on the soundtrack of documentary Academy Award winners Peter Kinoy and Pamela Yates’ documentary, “Poverty Outlaw” that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Ramon also served as a music consultant and guitar teacher for the 20th Century Fox feature film “PCU.”

THE ADVENTURES OF BO SEGOVIA:

The Adventures of Bo Segovia (recorded in Brooklyn, New York; released in 2007) includes 2 songs with Native Indian themes: "Buffalo Skies" & "Ghost Dance." "Buffalo Skies" is a spontaneous outpouring inspired by Ramon's fascination with the ghost dance and the odyssey of the Plains Indians. Its Shoshone and Sioux imagery and its New Orleans Funk rhythms make it an interesting musical and lyrical marriage. "Ghost Dance" is a song about materialism versus the spiritual. It has an Afro-Blues feel and a dazzling Middle Eastern violin solo. The title song, "The Adventures of Bo Segovia" tells the true life story of Ramon's grandfather who fought with Pancho Villa in the Mexican Revolution, escaped into Texas, rode the rails to Chicago, and eventually settled in Los Angeles. "Babes Elusive" is a funk-soul-reggae ballad. "Isolation Blues" has a jazz feel that cuts into a latin-rhumba groove. "Spirit of Muddy Waters," "Blues Keep Thrillin' Me" and "St. George Street Overture" are blues-oriented.

Biography
This is real music played by real musicians from Dallas to Alice! After being a working musician on the road for 25 years based in Dallas, Texas, Dan and his family moved to Alice Springs in Central Australia (where they would later become permanent residents). Dan didn't anticipate having many opportunities to play music in the outback, so he looked forward to relaxing a bit and taking some time to enjoy the natural beauty that would surround him. Once he arrived in Australia, he quickly discovered this would not be the case! He found the musicians in Alice Springs to be very accomplished and keen to play the kind of music he wrote and loved to perform. This resulted in an instant kinship bonded by the universal language and love of music. After years of playing together in the pubs of heartland Australia, Danny and the band have released Built for Comfort.

Started playing gigs at age 10. Played drums and guitar. First pay was $ 5.00 a night for 4 nights a week plus a meatball sandwich. Played in funk and soul bands. Started this band by playing with Carlton Edwards and Steve Roach at church. Early Influences were T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, Ray Charles, Allman Bros., This bands greatest strengths are the improv sessions in the middle of songs. Everybody knows each others stuff so well that it is easy to flow.

Biography
Whiteboy Slim has played music since he was a child, learning trumpet, piano, and sousaphone before he discovered the blues and picked up guitar and harmonica. From his first time on stage in a rock band when he was sixteen, he knew his path in life.
While studying at the Berkelee College of Music in Boston, he rubbed shoulders with musicians like Gary Burton, pianist Al Copley (co-founder of Roomful of Blues), and bassist Ron McClure (bassist with Charles Lloyd, Wynton Kelly, Quest, The 4th Way, Joe Henderson, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Pointer Sisters, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk).
After years on the road in everything from showbands to top-40 cover bands, he landed in Toronto where he founded the New Wave Band "Dirty Movies" which still has fans today.
Finally returning to his first love, he formed the Blues Band "Automatic Slim", which played most of the blues clubs in the city, including the legendary El Mocambo, The Silver Dollar Saloon, and the Black Swan. Automatic Slim was the house band at four different clubs on different nights of the week, and was noted for having best grossing Wednesday night downstairs at the El Mocambo.
After Automatic Slim broke up, he played solo before moving west and starting fresh as Whiteboy Slim. playing bars and festivals such as the Sasktel Jazz Festival, The Mid-Winter Blues Festival, The Prairie Arts Festival, the Flatland Music Festival, Blues for Peace, and many others. He has since played with international artists such as Henry Correy (AUS), Sam Dufour (Sweetsalt) (CAN), The Bill Hills Blues Band (CAN), and L.O.R.D. Funk (CAN/USA).
His second cd, the envelope-pushing "aka Whiteboy Slim." which earned him three awards at the 2007 Toronto Exclusive Magazine Music Awards--Best Blues Album, Best Blues Song ("Hey Hold On Stop"), and Best Males Blues Artist.
"It Ain't Art" won Honorable Mention in the first round of the 2007 Singer/Songwriter Awards.
2007- was given the "True Blues Man" award for perpetuating and preserving the Blues by The Black American Blues Historical Society of Canada.
In 2005 he was nominated Best Blues Act --Toronto Independent Music Awards.

Chicago Blues: A LIVING HISTORY is being hailed by music critics, musicians and music historians worldwide as the most important tribute of our time to the Chicago Blues.

CBLH brings together two generations of Chicago's greatest living traditionalists. In an unprecedented Chicago Blues collaboration, the legendary Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Billy Branch and Lurrie Bell--inheritors of the Chicago Blues tradition--have come together to celebrate and pay tribute to the evolution of the genre from its earliest days through the present.

In April of 2009, these seminal artists released their landmark 2-disc CD. The 21 track, double-CD pays tribute to the genre's creators, its rich history, its current practitioners, and its singular place in the (r)evolution of 20th century American music.
The group has united to give witness to the history of the genre in its most quintessential form as these extraordinary artists are the bridge between the originators of the genre and the Chicago Blues of today--through them the Chicago Blues remains a living tradition.

Blues Music Awards Nominees Announced. Louisiana Red receives five nominations! Each year, the Blues Foundation creates a wonderful forum to reflect upon the achievements of the blues community. Through a two tier nomination process, with a large pool of industry leaders as nominators, the year's releases are narrowed down to 26 award categories, each category having 5 nominees appearing on the ballot. From there Blues Foundation members will cast their votes, and in a ceremony that takes place each year in early May, the winners are announced. This is an exciting process and those chosen as nominees and winners will enjoy a notable burst of career recognition and attention. The nominees were announced today and to see a complete list please click here . Bob was pleased to see fellow Rhythm Room All-Star, Patrick Rynn, up for Best Instrumentalist in the Bass category! In prominence this year is Louisiana Red, with 5 nominations, 2 of which are specifically for the Red CD Back To The Black Bayou on Ruf Records, which was produced by Little Victor (Bob plays on 2 tracks on this CD). The Blues Foundation will present the Blues Music Awards at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis, TN on May 6, 2010. Congratulations to all the nominees!
Louisiana Red Honored with France's Academie Charles Cros Award! Little Victor reports that Louisiana Red / Back To The Black Bayou on Ruf Records has received France's Academie Charles Cros Award for "Best Blues Album 2009". Little Victor, who produced and plays on this wonderful record, describes this award as the French equivelent to the Grammy. Congratulations to Louisiana Red for this well deserved recognition. Ray Flerlage Blues Photos Posted Online. Unseen Little Walter Photos included! Ray Flerlage was an amazing Chicago based photographer, who's many brilliant blues images from the early 1960s are considered of great historic importance. Many examples of these photos appear in Ray's book Chicago Blues As Seen From The Inside, published in 2000. His photos have graced the covers of such Chess albums as J.B. Lenoir / Natural Man, Buddy Guy / I Was Walking Through The Woods, and Little Walter / Confessin The Blues and Delmark Records' Junior Wells / Blues Hit The Big Town and Blues Piano Orgy (Various Artists) . Ray passed away in 2002, but his work has recently appeared on the Cache Agency website. Included are some newly unearthed Little Walter photos including a great stage shot of Johnny Young, Robert Nighthawk, and Little Walter performing together. Also included online are Ray's photos of Howlin' Wolf, Arvella Gray, B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Koko Taylor and Lightnin' Hopkins (together), Memphis Slim, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Son House, Willie Dixon, and more. To see this website click here.

Rhythm Room All-Stars appear Friday and Saturday at the Rhythm Room! The Rhythm Room All-Stars feature Big Pete Pearson, Bob Corritore, Chris James, Patrick Rynn, and Brian Fahey. This weekend they appear at their namesake home base. Note that Dave Riley will do a guest set both nights and that Big Pete will only appear on the Friday night of this weekend. Honeyboy Edwards to appear on NBC Today Show, and to receive Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award! The 94 year old delta bluesman, Honeyboy Edwards, will appear on national television with an appearance on the Today Show Sunday, December 20th. This was arranged through the efforts of Lynn Orman of Orman Music and Media Group. News has also come down the pike that Honeyboy Edwards is to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Grammy's, in a special private ceremony that will honor musicians and achievers from all aspects of the music industry. Honeyboy is also prominently featured in the documentary film Six Generations Of The Blues, a film by Scott Shuman, which looks at the 30 year history of Chicago's Earwig Music, and it's founder Michael Frank. If in Chicago this Wednesday night, you can see a screening of this film at SPACE in Evanston.
Henry Gray Up For Offbeat Music Award! Andy Cornett reports that Henry Gray has been nominated for the prestigious Louisiana based Offbeat Magazine's "Best Of Beat' Awards in two categories; "Best Male Blues Performer" and "Best Blues CD". These nomination coincide with Henry's recent Blues Music Award nomination for best blues instrumentalist in the piano category. He brings with him all his great Chicago Blues history as a participant in some of the greatest classic recordings by Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Reed, Billy Boy Arnold, and others. Bob presents his annual Blues Christmas radio show this Sunday on KJZZ! Each year on the Sunday before Christmas, Bob presents a 5 hour blues Christmas special on his weekly radio show "Those Lowdown Blues" on KJZZ.
